Once at Musk Farm, “Boy with the Thorn” was a sculpture which Stuart Rattle had chosen for one of the 14 garden rooms. After his passing his family donated it to Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens.
Locals and visitors have been enjoying the panoramic views and beautiful surrounds of the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens since the 1860s. Perched high on the summit of an extinct volcano, it's the perfect spot for a picnic. Climb the Pioneers Lookout Tower for uninterrupted views of Daylesford town and surrounds, take in the colour and magnificent floral charms of Begonia House, or get a taste for local legend Alla Wolf-Tasker's cuisine at the Wombat Hill House cafe.
This little station stop is at our neighbours vineyard (Passing Clouds winery mentioned in a prior post), a 300m walk from Musk Farm. Musk Farm also has a dedicated stop (unsheltered but of course even closer than this one) on the tourism rail line. Every Sunday the Daylesford Spa country railway offers heritage train rides through the beautiful scenic countryside and forest of the Central Highlands, to the highest operating railway station in Victoria. The return journey along the top of the range traverses open farmland and thick forest, passing the sites of ancient volcanos and little communities established in the gold rush era.
You can board the train in Daylesford or flag it to stop at our own station here at Musk.
Once a month, The Silver Streak runs. This catered service has operated continuously on the first Saturday of the month for over 15 years. Ten minutes north of Daylesford, Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm is nestled amongst the rolling hills of Shepherds Flat. One of Victoria’s most important rural properties, Lavandula boasts European style gardens planted out to frame and meander around the original 1850 stone buildings. Productive vegetable and herb gardens supply the café, La Trattoria, where guests can dine inside or out in the gardens. The vast lavender garden provides quality materials for the creation of farm-made body lotions, room mists, insecticides and essential oil.
An ancient, extinct volcano Mount Franklin offers beautiful vistas of the surrounding countryside. The short drive down into the crater opens to a unique picnic and camping spot.
